Exams and Courses
Essential and Other Useful Qualifications / Courses / Study Leave
Postgraduate Qualifications
Qualification as a GP and inclusion on the GP Register requires a prescribed amount of supervised clincial experience in hospital and general practice settings and the successful attainment of membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (nMRCGP)
The nMRCGP consists of:
- The Applied Knowledge Test
- The Clinical Skills Assessment
- Workplace-Based Assessment
The clinical experience is usually gained as part of a three year vocational training programme. Those people with alternative training routes (eg. training outside the UK) can also apply for their experience to be recognised by an Article 11 application to the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board.
More information about the MRCGP can be found here and the website of the RCGP.
Additional Qualifications
In addition to passing the MRCGP it is recommended in the educational plan that you gain one or more of the optional postgraduate qualifications that are available to you.
These commonly include;
Diploma of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare
There is also scope to include courses specific to your own interests such as the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine .
Courses
In addition, the London deanery runs a number of courses for registrars each year.
The Minor Surgery, Telephone Consultation and Consultation Skills courses are usually very popular with registrars on the scheme. More information can be found here.
Study Leave
The requirements, allocations and application forms for study leave vary depending on your post. As these are subject to change it can be helpful to discuss this with the previous postholders.
There are two elements to organise;
1. Time Off
2. Money
You will need to arrange the former with your consultant and/or trainer and as much notice as possible makes the likelihood of getting the requested time more likely. For the money you need to complete the forms as advised below.
